Passionate about higher education on the African continent
Being raised in Christian family, I have explored how I could integrate the fundamentals of my background with the fundamentals of science. In what way could I work as an academic from my spirituality and lead an authentic live? I have also been asking this question on a broader level, during my internship at an entrepreneurship programme for marginalised youth in Uganda. I noticed that the offered education was based on a secular worldview, whereas most participants of the programme identified themselves as religious. This made me wonder: would it be possible to design a faith-based curriculum, so students will receive education that fits within their local context?
To find an answer to this question, I have visited a Christian university in Zambia. This experience showed me it is possible to design a faith-based curriculum, but left me also with many questions. I have translated these questions into a research proposal, which I have submitted to the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge. Currently, I am working as a doctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge. My research project will take place between October 2020 and 2023. In January 2022 I will conduct fieldwork for about 8 months at a private Zambian Christian university. With my research I hope to contribute to a new perspective, a religious one, to discussions around the nature and objectives of universities in Sub-Saharan Africa.
